How it works

1. Hide a treat. Pull out the lid by its cord and drop a snack into the drawer.
2. Let them dig. The smell gets them scratching at the grit surface.
3. Reward. Slide the drawer open so they get the treat. Short, happy sessions work best.

Good to know

• Flat on the floor, the board files front nails. Back paws take a little extra practice, and back nails usually wear down faster on walks, so many dogs need them trimmed less often.
• Most dogs learn the front-paw game in a few short sessions. Start by putting a treat on top of the board and rewarding any paw touch.
• Teach it as a game with a cue word and put the board away after each session, so the scratching stays on the board and not on your doors.
